USGS Project
The objective of the this project, titled “Managing the Nation’s Fish Habitat at Multiple Spatial Scales in a Rapidly Changing Climate”, is to provide state and federal agencies, non-government organizations and other stakeholders with GIS-based maps of fish habitat vulnerability at local, regional and national scales. The research team includes scientists from the USGS, several universities (University of Missouri, Michigan State University, Penn State University, University of Minnesota-Duluth, Purdue University, and University of Washington, as well as scientists from state agencies (Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment). The project team also partners with the National Fish Habitat Action Plan (NFHAP). Regional projects focus on the glacial lakes region, the eastern brook trout region and the lower Colorado River basin.
The products being produced by the HEMA lab include: land use forecasts at the national scale based on NLCD 2001, GIS base maps used for the land use change model (e.g., elevation, soils, road networks, population forecasts at the county level). Data and forecast maps will be incorporated into an online GIS-based system. Forecast maps from the land use change model are accessible at our LTM output portal.

Urban Expansion maps were created using the Land Transformation Model (LTM). Growth was based on U.S. Census population predictions along with land suitability parameters including distance to existing urban areas, highways, roads, stream along with slope. National parks and federally owned lands were excluded. When using the data, and for more information see the Journal of Land Use Science paper "Hierarchical modeling of urban growth across the conterminous USA: developing meso-scale quantity drivers for the Land Transformation Model".

Agricultural Expansion maps represent the amount of additional corn land predicted due to ethanol plant demand. Both urban and water areas were excluded. The urban exclusion area for each decade was derived from the urban growth projection maps. Pixels were assigned based on slope and their proximity to ethanol plants.
